MILAN (AP) — Italy’s top soccer league has taken a step that might avert a player strike.
The league and its players have agreed to play games on Jan. 6, a move that could precede a larger settlement and avoid a work stoppage.
The players’ association announced last month it was postponing a strike planned for Sept. 25-26. At the time, it also said it had decided to not play Jan. 6, a holiday in Italy.
Serie A President Maurizio Beretta tells the ANSA news agency that the agreement to restore the Jan. 6 games is a “very positive decision.” He adds that similar good will could lead to a labor contract by the end of November.
The players have said they will strike unless there is a new contract by Nov. 30.
