OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — States will have greater authority to send back out-of-state offenders under new interstate compact rules adopted in the wake of last year’s fatal shootings of four Lakewood police officers by former Arkansas inmate Maurice Clemmons.
The changes were approved Thursday by the Interstate Commission for Adult Offender Supervision at a meeting in San Antonio, Texas. States also will receive more complete criminal histories before agreeing to supervise offenders from other states.
The rule changes were proposed by Department of Corrections Secretary Eldon Vail and supported by Gov. Chris Gregoire. Since the shooting, Washington has refused to accept parolees and probationers from Arkansas.
The changes will take effect March 1.
