CAMAS — Camas scored early and often, the defense was dominant, and quarterback Logan Grindy was madly efficient.

And then the second half started.

The Papermakers (7-0) rolled through the first half and then limped through the second Friday, ending up with a 34-15 non-league victory over Heritage at Doc Harris Stadium.

“I think we had a great first half,” Camas coach Jon Eagle said. “I think we need to keep the foot on the gas in the second.”

The Papermakers, ranked second in Class 3A in The Associated Press’ statewide poll, built a 31-0 halftime lead against the Class 4A Timberwolves. Grindy scored on runs of 18 yards and 1 yard and threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Ervin.

Camas had 280 yards of offense in the first half, as Grindy went 10 of 18 for 194 yards.

In the final two quarters, the Papermakers were content to play ball-control and work the clock.

Heritage took advantage with a 93-yard drive that ended when Jake Dahlberg threw an 11-yard TD pass to Tim Hergert, then added a 48-yard scoring pass from Dahlberg to Andy Bemis.

But the Timberwolves (1-6) never had the ball while trailing by fewer than 19 points in the second half.

“We definitely came together as a team,” said Dahlberg, who took over at quarterback midway through the second quarter. “It was a team-building experience.”

Camas spent the first half making all the big plays, starting when Heritage muffed the opening kickoff and the Papermakers recovered at the Timberwolves’ 30-yard line. Moments later, the Papermakers had the lead.

After building the advantage to 17-0, Camas converted a fourth-and-25 play when Grindy’s pass was batted down by Heritage’s Michael Rivers and deflected into the hands of receiver Miguel Salamanca.

One play later, Grindy scored on a quarterback sneak.

“We’re happy; it’s a win,” Grindy said. “We didn’t really keep it up in the second half. We have some things to work on.”
