Ridgefield’s Brett Johnson shot a 5-under-par 67 Tuesday at Three Rivers Golf Course in Kelso to capture the Class 1A district golf championship by three shots.

Johnson started the day three shots behind first-round leader Ross Kukula of Ilwaco after shooting a 1-under 71 on Monday.

But Tuesday’s round shot Johnson past Kukula, who finished with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday.

Johnson’s two-day total of 138 was 6-under par. Kukula finished a 3-under 141. Ilwaco claimed five of the top six spots to win the team title with 104 points. Ridgefield was second with 64.

The district hopes to advance 15 golfers to next May’s state tournament. But state berths won’t be determined until the spring. Also finishing in the top 10 were Ridgefield’s Taylor Konkright (seventh, 158) and Brady Williams (10th, 167).

Garfield under probation

The head football coach and an assistant at Garfield of Seattle have resigned and the school’s athletic director has been placed on administrative leave after the school’s athletic programs were placed on probation after academically ineligible players played in the Bulldogs’ win over Sammamish on Sept. 10.

In sanctions imposed by the KingCo Conference Monday, Garfield’s football team will not be eligible for the postseason this year and in 2011. The team also forfeited its 24-22 win over Sammamish.

All of the school’s teams are on probation until Sept. 1, 2012, but will remain eligible for the postseason.

Sixth-year head coach Anthony Allen resigned on Friday. First-year defensive coordinator Anthony Kelley, a former University of Washington standout, resigned Monday.
