A chemical explosion Wednesday night prompted fire officials to evacuate a 64-unit building at the Shorewood Apartments, 5555 E. Evergreen Blvd.

The incident at 7:35 p.m. occurred when a maintenance man was using chemicals in a maintenance room next to the basement swimming pool, said Jim Flaherty of the Vancouver Fire Department.

Two hazardous-materials technicians were called to investigate and firefighters were working to ventilate three floors that house about 110 people.

The maintenance man was reportedly hurt, with a cut on his head, and was taken to a local hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Flaherty said about 85 people were evacuated as the building was being ventilated.

Residents were taken outside the building for a time and then allowed to stay in the complex store/cafe and workout room.

Residents were allowed back into their homes by 10 p.m.
