A former assistant bank manager in Ridgefield was sentenced Monday to seven months in jail and two months of home detention for embezzling $60,000 from a bank vault and cash-dispensing machines.

Michele L. Chartier, 26, of Ariel pleaded guilty in July to embezzling money between March and September 2009 from the Ridgefield branch of the iQ Credit Union.

Prosecutors said Chartier created a $60,000 advance to be paid on a customer’s line of credit and tricked a co-worker into causing a payment to be made from the customer’s money market account.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Chartier said she embezzled the money to pay for her unborn child. At sentencing, it was learned, however, that she used the money to pay for household expenses and a mortgage.
