SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A pathologist says a Woodburn, Ore., police captain likely died instantly when a bomb exploded in December 2008 at a West Coast Bank branch. Dr. Larry Lewman of the Oregon state medical examiner’s office testified Monday that Capt. Tom Tennant’s body was riddled with metal fragments, wire and other elements that apparently came from the bomb.

Lewman conducted autopsies on Tennant and Oregon State Police Senior Trooper William Hakim, the other police officer killed in the blast. Lewman says Hakim probably survived the initial explosion but bled to death within a minute or two.

Lewman testified in the aggravated murder trials of Bruce Turnidge and his son, Joshua Turnidge. The two are charged with planting the bomb outside the Woodburn bank as part of a failed robbery attempt.

The explosion also injured Woodburn Police Chief Scott Russell and bank employee Laurie Perkett.
