BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — A Kitsap County sheriff’s deputy says a 4-year-old boy loaded and fired a shotgun at his 23-year-old mother, injuring her.

Deputy Scott Wilson says the woman was taken Monday to Tacoma General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives say the boy loaded a shotgun cartridge into a 12-gauge semiautomatic shotgun and pulled the trigger. Wilson says the investigation continues but the shooting appears to be accidental.

The unidentified mother told detectives she was on the phone with her back to the boy and didn’t hear the child load the gun. She said she hadn’t known he had access to it.

Wilson says the boy’s father had earlier given him a cartridge to handle because he was curious about firearms. The father was not at the home when the shooting happened.
