SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon attorney general’s office has settled a complaint against Bayer HealthCare for $1.165 million over claims that One A Day men’s multivitamins reduced the risk of prostate cancer.

Attorney General John Kroger said Tuesday the Oregon share of the settlement is part of a larger $3.3 million settlement also negotiated with California and Illinois.

An investigation by the states alleged that Bayer made promotional claims even though the company knew or should have known its multivitamins do not decrease the risk of cancer.

Some of the ads included testimonials from Major League Baseball players.

Bayer agreed in the settlement that it cannot make claims about its vitamins unless they are supported by competent and reliable scientific evidence.
