SAO PAULO (AP) — Tony Blair tells Rio de Janeiro Olympic organizers they need to focus on a legacy that goes beyond sports, making sure the games benefit the city well after 2016.

The former British prime minister was crucial in helping London win the bid for the 2012 Games.

He says there is no point hosting the games if there isn’t a “sense that something is being built for the long term.” Blair adds that “part of the legacy is about what sports can do to society” and that “sports today is far more important that just sports itself.” He says sports can be used in promoting policies to combat crime and promote health.

Blair’s comments came at a seminar with business leaders and Brazilian government authorities in Sao Paulo.
