The Port of Vancouver on Tuesday welcomed U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., to celebrate a federal grant she secured to help the port build up its infrastructure and create jobs.

The port will use the $10 million grant to complete two important parts of its $137 million West Vancouver Freight Access Project. One project will build an overpass at Gateway Avenue to separate vehicle and train traffic, allowing better access to the port’s Terminal 5, and supporting the handling of various cargo. The second is aimed at significantly improving rail service to United Grain facilities. Both are slated to begin construction in 2011. The West Vancouver Freight Access Project, to be completed in 2017, is expected to create between 1,000 and 2,000 new, permanent jobs and roughly 4,000 construction jobs over the life of the project, according to the port.
