Wash. drug smugglers busted near Salem

Three traffic stops along Interstate 5 in the Salem area within the last few weeks by Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers led to the seizure of nearly 20 lbs. of marijuana and five arrests.

On October 10, 2010 at 1:55 a.m. an OSP trooper stopped a 2003 Ford Focus displaying Texas license plates northbound on Interstate 5 near Market Street for a speed violation. Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the two male occupants from Seattle, Washington after approximately 7 lbs. of marijuana was found concealed inside with the help of another OSP trooper and drug detection canine. The two men, JONATHAN BLAKE HAMRIC, age 23, and PATRICK JORDAN SHEPHERD, age 23, were booked into the Marion County Jail for Unlawful Possession and Distribution of Marijuana.

On October 17, 2010 at 1:55 a.m. an OSP trooper stopped a 2002 Toyota Camry displaying Washington license plates northbound on Interstate 5 near Mission Street for an equipment lighting violation. Subsequent investigation with the assistance of an OSP trooper and drug detection canine led to the discovery and seizure of approximately 12 lbs. of marijuana in the car and the arrest of a Winlock, Washington couple. GORDON LARRY LUMSDEN, age 43, and BRENDA JANE LUMSDEN, age 41, were both booked into Marion County Jail for Unlawful Possession and Distribution of Marijuana.

On October 24, 2010 at 9:00 p.m. an OSP trooper stopped a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta displaying Oregon license plates northbound on Interstate 5 near Commercial Street for speed and lane change violations. Subsequent investigation with the assistance of an OSP trooper and drug detection canine led to the discovery of 3.8 ounces of marijuana in the vehicle. Driver HARLAN MAX BROOKS, age 20, from Sherwood, was cited to appear in Marion County Circuit Court for Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.

Approximate total value of the nearly 20 pounds of marijuana seized during these three traffic stops is $50,000.
