NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — A judge has issued an arrest warrant for a prominent New York City basketball coach accused of sexually assaulting a player on a visit to western Massachusetts more than 30 years ago.

Ernest Lorch failed to show for his arraignment on charges of indecent assault and battery and attempted rape in Hampshire Superior Court.

Lorch’s New York-based attorney, Frederick Cohn, said he sent prosecutors a letter indicating that Lorch would not be in court because he is fighting extradition. Prosecutors said they had received that letter. Judge Bertha Josephson issued the default warrant Tuesday.

Lorch, who is in his late 70s and uses a wheelchair, is accused of abusing the then-17-year-old player during a trip to a tournament at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in the late 1970s.
