Defending champion Melzer into Vienna quarters

VIENNA (AP) — Defending champion Jurgen Melzer defeated Lukasz Kubot of Poland 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Bank Austria Trophy.

The top-seeded Austrian went 5-3 down and saved a set point when Kubot served at 5-4 in the opening set.

Melzer converted his first match point in the second-set tiebreaker when Kubot netted a return.

In first-round play, Bjorn Phau defeated Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-4.

Phau will play fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, who had a bye in the first round.
