ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — The Douglas County, Ore., sheriff’s office says a young woman called for help after accidentally shooting her fiance in the leg while they were deer hunting.

The sheriff’s statement says 20-year-old Kristina Shockley of Rainier told 911 she shot a deer while hunting Wednesday with 33-year-old Robert Service, also of Rainier. The deer was still alive when they located it. Shockley reported that she loaded her rifle, intending to shoot the deer again. When she closed the bolt, the weapon discharged, hitting Service in the back of the right leg.

He was taken by helicopter from Bland Mountain in the Days Creek area to a Eugene-area hospital.

The sheriff’s office says the case is being investigated as a non-criminal accidental shooting.
