MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Tests have confirmed that another fox in the Cave Junction area had rabies, the fourth case in southern Oregon so far this year.

The Mail Tribune reported the gray fox fought a tug-of-war with a Cave Junction man who found it when he pulled a tarp from under a shed on his property.

Jess Martin said that when he pulled the tarp out, the animal pulled it back in, and after a short tussle, the fox pushed its head out “and yapped like it was in pain.”

The fox then laid on its side and was running in place before Martin killed it with a shovel.

Oregon health officials warn the best precautions against rabies are to keep house pets up to date on their vaccines and never handle bats.
