FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — Freshman quarterback Pete Thomas ignited a 21-point first quarter with a touchdown pass, Leonard Mason ran for 124 yards and three scores, and Colorado State defeated winless New Mexico 38-14 Saturday night.

New Mexico lost starting quarterback B.R. Holbrook to a right shoulder injury late in the first quarter. He was hit by nose tackle Guy Miller and drilled into the turf as he released a pass that fell incomplete. The force of the blow sent Holbrook’s helmet flying.

Thomas, standing up to the rush, delivered a 43-yard pass to Lou Greenwood for Colorado State’s first touchdown, starting a 31-7 run that carried the Rams (3-6, 2-3 Mountain West) to a 31-14 halftime lead.

New Mexico (0-8, 0-4) fell to 1-19 in two seasons under coach Mike Locksley and have yet to win on the road. The Lobos’ lone victory came against Colorado State last November, a 29-27 decision in Albuquerque.
