PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Mark Calcavecchia has used eight birdies for an 8-under-par 64 at Del Monte Golf Course for an early three-stroke lead Friday in the opening round of the First Tee Open.

Former winner Scott Simpson, Fred Couples and Bob Tway all have shot 67s at Del Monte, while Chip Beck’s 67 is the low opening round at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Tom Pernice, Jr., is also at 5 under after birdieing five of the first six holes. But Pernice, a late starter, still has seven holes to play at Pebble Beach.

Two-time defending champ Jeff Sluman, seeking his first win of the season, has shot 68 at Del Monte, tied with Larry Nelson and Brad Byrant.

The start of the first round at Del Monte was delayed for 45 minutes because of fog.
