Schiavone beats Bondarenko to reach 4th round

NEW YORK (AP) — French Open champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy beat 29th-seeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-1, 7-5 Friday in the U.S. Open’s third round.

The sixth-seeded Schiavone compiled a 29-13 edge in winners.

It’s the fifth time Schiavone has reached the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows.

Next up for Schiavone is a match against 20th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, who eliminated Gisela Dulko of Argentina 6-1, 6-2.

Bondarenko was trying to was trying to reach the fourth round of a major for the second time. She defeated U.S. teenager Melanie Oudin in the second round.
