COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Kevin Anderson is the new athletic director at the University of Maryland.

Anderson has been Army’s athletic director since 2004. He is the first African-American to hold that position at West Point.

Senior associate athletic director Kathy Worthington confirmed the hiring on Saturday. She said Anderson will be introduced by the school on Tuesday.

Anderson will be in charge of Maryland’s 27 athletic teams. He takes over for Debbie Yow, who left Maryland for North Carolina State in July.

Anderson graduated from San Francisco State University in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. In addition to his duties at West Point, he served as chairman of the Division I Men’s Basketball Issues Committee.

The hiring was first reported by The Washington Post.
