Fourth quarter turnovers that led to Kalama points doomed the Beavers in the season opener.

Woodland tied the game at 13-13 on Cy Whitmire’s 30-yard run and Oliver Moss’ point-after kick. Whitmire rushed 15 times for 90 yards in the game.

But Woodland coughed up the ball twice in the final eight minutes that eventually led to Kalama touchdowns. The most costly was one in with five minutes to play as the Beavers were driving, down 19-13.

“Our inexperience and youth showed we can’t make mistakes. We just have to get better and mature as the season goes on,” Woodland coach Mark Greenleaf said. “Kalama did a great job running the ball and pounded it in when they needed to.”

Next up: Woodland (0-1) vs. Ridgefield; Kalama (1-0) at Hoquiam.
