Vancouver-based Tidewater Barge Lines announced this week it received a $1.3 million award from the state of Oregon to expand storage capacity at the company’s Umatilla, Ore., biodiesel terminal.

The regional facility is a major supplier of the fuel which is blended with petroleum. The grant also will be used for pipeline improvements and the addition of a two-bay loading rack which will lessen truck loading times for Tidewater’s agricultural customers. The terminal in Umatilla handles more than 50 million gallons of fuel and fertilizer each year.

Founded in 1932, Tidewater has expanded its Columbia River barge services to include terminal services and marine construction and repair. More than 300 people are employed by the company, which has an operating area that spans 465 miles on the Columbia and Snake river systems.
