Ore. sheriff to send teens 16-17 to adult jail

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Teenagers 16 or 17 years old charged with serious crimes in Josephine County will be sent to jail rather than a juvenile facility.

The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports the Josephine County sheriff’s office has changed its policy after learning that three 16-year-old boys charged with assault were transferred to the jail from juvenile detention last week.

The county’s juvenile department director, Janine Wilson, told the newspaper that state law mandates teens 16 or 17 years old charged with Measure 11 crimes be jailed, unless there is an agreement to house them in juvenile detention.

She said that’s the policy in about half of the counties in Oregon.

But Wilson said it became a manpower issue with the Josephine County sheriff’s office.
