MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Mesa police have released a composite sketch of a suspect who threw a cup of acid at another woman last week, leaving her with second-degree burns to her face and chest.
Authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying and locating the woman who attacked 41-year-old Derri Velarde in an apartment parking lot Thursday afternoon. Velarde remains hospitalized in the burn unit of Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix.
The suspect is described as a 30- to 40-year-old Hispanic woman. Police believe the attack was not random. Although Velarde says she did not recognize her attacker, authorities believe it’s someone who knows her.
Mesa police say the incident doesn’t appear to be related to a similar acid attack Aug. 30 on a woman in Vancouver, Wash.
