SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The family of Spokane Valley nursery owner Scott Creach hopes the sheriff’s office releases more information Tuesday about his fatal shooting by a deputy.

On Monday, Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich (kuh-NEZ’-oh-vich) said Deputy Brian Hirzel shouted commands at Creach to put down his gun, but Creach continued to walk toward the unmarked car. The sheriff said Creach was less than two feet away when Hirzel hit him with a baton and then shot him in the chest.

Creach’s son Alan told KXLY-TV and KREM-TV his mother, who was listening from the nearby home, never heard the deputy shout at her husband.

The 74-year-old Creach went out to check on a suspected a prowler Aug. 25 in the parking lot of his nursery business, called the Plant Farm.
