MADRID (AP) — The Italian Grand Prix this weekend will mark the close of Formula One’s European season, and it is also looking likely to be critical in deciding the fate of the drivers’ championship title.
Although five drivers are still in the hunt with six races left, Lewis Hamilton of McLaren and Mark Webber of Red Bull have opened up some room on top of the standings after filling the top two places at the Belgian GP.
On Sunday at Monza, Sebastian Vettel will be looking to overcome another lapse of judgment, while defending F1 champion Jenson Button could cede the No. 1 spot at McLaren to Hamilton with a poor showing.
Only a podium finish will do for Fernando Alonso, whose Ferrari teams faces sanctions Wednesday for breaking team rules.
