PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A man serving time for killing a 13-year-old girl nearly 25 years ago will stay in prison after telling the Oregon state Parole Board the killing did not affect him.
Omar Carroll was convicted in the December 1985 stabbing of Tina Marie Jones in Portland. He was 17 at the time and says he got the idea from reading a book.
KPTV reports that parole board members agreed unanimously Wednesday to deny Carroll’s request for parole, saying he suffers from a severe emotional disturbance and isn’t ready to be released.
He was sentenced to life in prison but has appeared before the board several times seeking early release. Citing a new Oregon law, board members say Carroll now won’t be eligible for parole until March 2021.
