South Carolina State shuts out Mississippi Valley

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — Chris Massey and Jordan Asheton rushed for two touchdowns each Saturday as South Carolina State beat Mississippi Valley State 44-0.

South Carolina State (1-1) held the Delta Devils (0-2) to 44 yards total offense, minus-9 rushing, as the Bulldogs recorded five sacks.

Massey, who rushed for 73 yards on 10 carries, scored on the Bulldogs’ first play on offense after the Delta Devils turned the ball over on downs at their 28. He scored again after Lennel Elmore blocked a punt and Dawan Thompson returned it to the Mississippi Valley 5.

Asheton, the Bulldogs’ leading rusher with 77 yards on 12 carries, scored on 3- and 1-yard runs.

Malcolm Long completed 21 of 28 passes for 232 yards and one touchdown, a 6-yarder to Devin Wherry. Elmore caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Derrick Wiley.
