HUNT VALLEY, Md. (AP) — The longtime coach of Michael Phelps says the 14-time Olympic gold medalist isn’t the best swimmer in the world right now.

Bob Bowman said Monday that Ryan Lochte deserves that distinction.

Lochte beat Phelps in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke finals at the U.S. national championships last month, then won six gold medals to Phelps’ five at the Pan Pacific championships.

Phelps says his disappointing performance this summer will serve as motivation for next summer’s world championships and his ultimate target: the 2012 Olympics in London.

Bowman wants Phelps to excel at the world meet, but says “the only thing that matters to Michael is London.”

Phelps and Bowman spoke at the Michael Phelps Foundation Golf Classic, a charity event.
