PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland Police Chief Mike Reese says an officer followed police guidelines and policies when he used a beanbag shotgun last November against a 12-year-old girl.
The Oregonian reports that Reese announced his finding Wednesday. But he says his department is reviewing its policies and procedures on using the devices.
The officer involved, Christopher Humphreys, is on disability leave.
A TriMet videotape of the incident shows the girl punching a transit officer in the face. He wrestled her to the ground and Humphreys, after repeatedly telling her to stop resisting, fired a beanbag that struck her thigh.
The girl later was convicted in juvenile court of resisting arrest and interfering with public transportation. An attorney for her family has filed a notice to sue the city.
