CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State University has installed emergency telephones in 120 classrooms.

The Gazette-Times says that anyone who picks up a phone will immediately be connected to a campus dispatcher who can send police to the scene. OSU public safety director Jack Rogers says it will be a great help in quickly responding to potentially dangerous situations.

The $60,000 installation adds to a system of emergency phones outdoors on the campus, in each residence hall and in every elevator. Officials eventually want phones in every classroom.

The school also can alert about 45,000 people through a system that sends recorded messages to listeners about emergencies and tells them what to do.
