MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) — A Milwaukie, Ore., police spokeswoman says an Amtrak train struck and killed a bicyclist Monday evening in the community south of Portland.

Officer Ulli Neitch says witnesses told dispatchers that a bicyclist was pedaling across the railroad tracks at about 9:30 p.m. when a southbound train came along.

She tells The Oregonian the bicyclist was killed instantly. The Amtrak train stopped less than 500 feet south.

The officer says it appears the train crossing arms were down across the intersection. The investigation continues.
