TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona notched what could be a program-defining win over Iowa last weekend, a victory that had fans dancing in the aisles and players hugging on the field.

Now it’s time to take the next step.

Starting Saturday against California, the Wildcats will look to build on what they hope was a watershed moment in Tucson. Fail to beat the Bears and the win over the then-ninth-ranked Hawkeyes won’t mean nearly what they had hoped.

Arizona moved up 10 spots in the AP poll to 14th based on the victory, its highest ranking since opening the 1999 season fourth. The Wildcats lost their opener that season and went on to finish 6-6, kicking off a string of nine straight non-winning seasons.

They’re hoping to avoid a similar letdown this season.
