SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle city officials have picked a prominent New York firm to design the central waterfront area where the Alaskan Way Viaduct will be demolished.

James Corner Field Operations will lead the team that will design nine acres of park space and a surface street. The Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce says city officials like Corner’s plan to get the project moving quickly and focus on Seattle’s natural beauty, working waterfront and urban core.

Corner is best known for leading the team designing Manhattan’s High Line, a former elevated rail line being converted into a mile and a half long park.

Corner plans to start the Seattle design work next month, with a finished plan in 2015. Construction is scheduled from 2016 to 2018.
