LOS ANGELES (AP) — The California State Athletic Commission says UFC middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen tested positive for steroids following a loss to Anderson Silva last month in Oakland.
The commission suspended Sonnen’s license, likely squashing the UFC’s plans to match Sonnen against Silva in a rematch early next year.
The commission said on Wednesday that Sonnen’s drug test revealed an abnormally high testosterone-to-estrogen level, an indicator of steroid use. Executive Officer George Dodd says a second test showed similar results.
Sonnen controlled the first four rounds of his fight against Silva at UFC 117 in Oakland’s Oracle Arena, but lost to the middleweight champion on a fifth-round choke.
