Thieves targeting GPS units

The Gresham Police Department has noticed an increase in car prowls during recent months where the target of interest seems to be GPS units. Between June 1, 2010 and September 1, 2010 there were 50 reported car prowls where a GPS unit was stolen. It is important to remember that this is just the car prowls that were reported, so it is suspected that there are many more unreported thefts.

The Gresham Police Department would like to remind you that if at all possible remove valuables from your vehicle or place them out of sight. Many of these GPS units are portable and easy to remove. Record serial numbers for all valuables in your vehicle or your home for that matter and place them in a safe place. Many items could be recovered at area pawn shops if we only had the serial numbers. Park you car in a well lit area or garage if at all possible. Keep your windows rolled up and your doors locked. Many of these prowls are crimes of opportunity and an unlocked vehicle is an opportunity.
