Paper: mental patient neglected at Ore. hospital

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Nurses at Oregon State Hospital in Salem say a bleeding mental patient would have been taken to the emergency room sooner if the doctor on call had stopped to check on her.

The Oregonian reports that documents it obtained under state public records law showed at least two nurses were concerned about the rate of bleeding.

But the doctor on call told the newspaper he left instructions with one nurse to call a backup physician if there was a problem.

The mental hospital’s new superintendent, Greg Roberts, who just took over this week, said he reviewed a report and praised the nurses for doing an “outstanding” job.

Roberts says hospital policy is clear — doctors who are on call must examine the patient when nurses believe there is a problem.
