Prep football: Mountain View 30, Heritage 29

Chavo Camargo kicked a 21-yard field with 23 seconds to lift the Thunder in a game that had five lead changes in the second half.

P.J. Jones rushed for 219 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns, and Jeff Carmody had 100 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown to lead the Thunder.

After Heritage took a 29-27 lead on Garrett Worle’s 35-yard field — his third of the game — with 3:55 left, Mountain View drove 67 yards on 11 plays to set up the game-winning kick.

Heritage controlled the first half, taking a 17-7 lead into the intermission. But Jones broke free on a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, and the fireworks started at McKenzie Stadium.

“We just said ‘OK, it’s going to be a shootout, so let’s go out and get it done,’ ” Jones said. “That last drive was all about heart.”

After Worle’s second field goal put Heritage up 20-14 in the second quarter, Jones gave Mountain View the lead with a 26-yard TD run with 2:23 left in the third quarter, giving the Thunder their first lead at 21-20.

But Heritage responded with a four-play drive. Ben Lyons’ 52-yard catch and run was the big play that set up Nate Mitchell’s 9-yard TD catch that gave Heritage a 26-21 lead to end the third quarter.

But Carmody’s 44-yard touchdown run with 9:09 left in the game gave Mountain View a 27-26 lead.

Heritage drove down field and had a first-and-goal at the Mountain View 1, but the Thunder tackled Michael Rivers for a 3-yard loss and then sacked Riley O’Dell for a 14-yard loss. An incomplete pass preceded Worle’s go-ahead field goal.
