Lunch Buddy volunteer training set for today

A new school year has begun, and with it, renewed need for Lunch Buddy volunteers in Vancouver district elementary schools.

An information session for interested adult volunteers will be held today and again on Oct. 14.

Today’s session runs 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Vancouver district’s Robert C. Bates Center for Educational Leadership (adjacent to Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School), at 2921 Falk Road.

The Oct. 14 orientation is noon to 12:45 p.m.; a $5 lunch is available with pre-order.

Under the program established in 1993 to create positive one-on-one mentoring, Lunch Buddies meet once a week with their elementary school pupil partner. Lunch, then play, crafts or conversation lasts no longer than an hour.

While 450 children in Vancouver Public Schools have been matched with adults, more than 100 pupils remain on a waiting list.

The need is especially urgent for male volunteers in the 20 elementary schools that participate — all but Salmon Creek Elementary.
