The WIAA announced the matchups for the Week 10 state preliminary football games for Class 4A and 3A.

In the 4A playoffs, the Greater St. Helens League champion will host the No. 4 team from the South Puget Sound League South Division. The 4A GSHL No. 2 team will play at the KingCo’s No. 2 team. The 4A GSHL No. 3 team will play at the SPSL North’s No. 1 team.

The 3A GSHL also will get three berths to the state preliminary round.

The 3A GSHL champion will host the Metro League’s No. 4 team. The 3A GSHL No. 2 team will play at the Narrows League No. 2 team. The 3A GSHL No. 3 team will play at the Metro League’s No. 3 team.

Volleyball, soccer state allocations announced

The WIAA announced state tournament allocations for volleyball and girls soccer playoffs on Tuesday.

The teams in the Class 4A and 3A Greater St. Helens League will once again pair up with District 3 to determine state tournament teams. For the previous four years, District 4’s 4A teams had paired up with District 2.

That means in volleyball, three 4A GSHL teams could potentially earn berths to the 4A District 3/4 tournament at Kentwood High School. The 4A GSHL’s No. 3 team will have to play the No. 10 team from the South Puget Sound League in a pigtail match to qualifying for the 16-team double-elimination bracket. The GSHL’s Nos. 1 and 2 teams earn spots in the 16-team bracket on Nov. 6-7.

The 3A bi-district is a 12-team tournament at Auburn Mountainview High School. The 3A GSHL will earn four berths in the tournament, with the No. 1 team earning one of four automatic berths to the quarterfinals.

In soccer, the 4A and 3A bi-district playoffs are single-match playoffs to be played on Nov. 6. However, the No. 3 team from the 4A GSHL must play a pigtail game against the South Puget Sound League’s No. 10 team to earn a spot in the Nov. 6 playoffs. The 4A playoffs will take place at Mount Tahoma and Bethel high schools.

The 3A playoffs will be held at Highline, Olympia and Sumner high schools, as well as McKenzie Stadium. Four teams from the 3A GSHL will earn spots in the 3A bi-district playoffs.

Heritage hires new wrestling coach

Former Union wrestling assistant coach Zane Freschette has been selected to take over the head coaching position at Heritage High School.

“He is the right fit for us when we were looking for certain things to fit into our beliefs, our core values as an athletic department,” said Leta Meyer, Heritage’s athletic coordinator. “He’s about hard work, and he’s all about the kids. His belief is to give back to the community. It’s about developing kids, giving our kids the best experience. It’s about our school, and not just one thing, one sport. We all support each other.”

Freschette has been an assistant at Union for that school’s first three wrestling seasons. A 2001 graduate of Evergreen, Freschette finished fifth at Mat Classic his senior year.

“I’ve been around wrestling for the last 19 years and have had a lot of fun doing it,” he said. “Wrestling gave me a lot of opportunities, and it built who I am as a person.”

Freschette takes over for Donnie McPherson, who resigned after a long, successful run as the school’s coach. He led the Timberwolves to the 2003 Class 4A state team title and also coached several individual state champions during his time with the team.
