SHELTON, Wash. (AP) — A Mason County sheriff’s officer says two hunters have turned themselves in after hearing news reports of the gunshot death of a man who was picking greenery in woods near Shelton.
Chief Deputy Dean Byrd said sheriff’s detectives were questioning the unidentified hunters Wednesday evening. He says the hunters reportedly told officers they had no idea they had hit someone. Byrd says another salal picker reported hearing a “pop” and seeing his friend fall to the ground about 10 a.m. Wednesday in an area off Highway 101.
The deputy says the dead man’s friend and family speak Mam, a language spoken in parts of Guatemala. A translator on the scene Wednesday identified the victim as 24-year-old Carlos Paulo-Carrillo.
Salal is sold for use in floral arrangements.
