PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — Crews have opened a new channel for a section of the Elwha River as part of the work to remove two dams and restore salmon habitat in the Olympic National Park.
The Peninsula Daily News reports water started flowing Tuesday through the new channel at the south end of Lake Mills, the reservoir formed by the Glines Canyon dam.
The dam and the Elwha dam farther downstream are scheduled to be removed next year in a $351 million project, one of the largest such undertakings in the nation.
