MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — A freight train struck and killed an 18-year-old high school student walking on the east side of Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks on Friday at Mount Vernon, Wash.
Police spokeswoman Shannon Haigh says there is evidence the 18-year-old man was listening to a music player, with his hood up, and likely did not hear the train or its warning horn. She says he attended Emerson High School.
Railroad spokesman Gus Melonas says the train was traveling about 40 mph. It had originated in Everett and was servicing businesses in the area.
The fatality did not occur at a crossing.
