MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — A freight train struck and killed a woman walking on Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks Friday morning at Mount Vernon.

Police say the train blew its horn and braked but was unable to stop in time.

Railroad spokesman Gus Melonas says the train was traveling less than 40 mph. It had originated in Everett and was servicing Mount Vernon businesses.
