ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Chris Tillman held Tampa Bay hitless for six innings and Nick Markakis made a leaping catch at the wall in the ninth to preserve the Baltimore Orioles’ 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night.

Tillman lost his bid for a no-hitter when manager Buck Showalter lifted him after the 22-year-old right-hander threw 101 pitches. B.J. Upton lined a two-out single off Jeremy Accardo (1-0) for Tampa Bay’s first hit with two outs in the seventh.

Brian Roberts snapped a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the eighth. Roberts drove in two runs with a triple in Baltimore’s 4-1 season-opening victory on Friday night.
