PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Construction on the third and final phase of a three-year runway rehabilitation program is getting under way at Portland International Airport.

Airport officials say that work on the project resumes Monday to complete major runway improvements.

The final phase will reconstruct the airport’s south runway, worn down by years of aircraft use.

The Port of Portland rehabilitated the north runway in 2009, and last year extended it from 8,000 feet to 9,825 feet, allowing larger aircraft to use it while the south runway closes for reconstruction.

Increased flights over some airport neighborhoods are expected during the south runway reconstruction project.
