LONDON (AP) — Aston Villa has opened talks with American goalkeeper Brad Friedel about signing a new contract.

The 39-year-old keeper’s current deal expires at the end of the season.

Friedel’s agent, Tony McGill, says talks with Villa chief executive Paul Faulkner “are going very well indeed.”

McGill says “Brad is very happy at Villa. If Brad was not happy, he would not be talking over a new contract.”

Friedel joined Villa from Blackburn in 2008. He made 82 appearances for the United States, and played for the Columbus Crew, Galatasaray and Brondby before moving to England in 1997 to join Liverpool. He spent three seasons at Anfield before moving to Blackburn.
