False report about puppy in Spokane trash

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Officials say a report of a Dalmatian puppy abandoned in a trash bin in Spokane last week was false.

Spokane County animal control director Nancy Hill says an investigation by her agency found that the dog was not abandoned in a trash container as originally reported.

Hill says a woman brought the 6-week-old puppy to the Spokane Humane Society last week and told staff that she had found it in a trash bin. Hill says it’s a crime to abandon an animal so the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service investigated.

Hill says she isn’t sure why the woman lied. It could have been that she didn’t want to pay a fee to hand over the animal to the shelter.
