TUMWATER, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Patrol says a fleeing driver committed suicide as a high-speed chase came to an end Tuesday morning on Interstate 5 at Tumwater.
Trooper Guy Gill told KOMO Radio that chase began just before 6 a.m. when a car going about 85 mph passed a marked patrol car.
The chase ended when the fleeing car spun out near Tumwater. Gill says the trooper saw the driver raise a hand. Then the trooper heard a shot and saw the driver slump over.
Gill says no officer fired a gun.
Thurston County authorities are investigating the death.
The investigation has caused a mile-long backup of southbound traffic.
