INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former IndyCar driver Sam Schmidt has hired Jay Howard to drive in next month’s Indianapolis 500.

Howard will team with American Townsend Bell and Canadian Alex Tagliani on Schmidt’s team for the May 29 race.

Howard won the 2006 Indy Lights title and has driven on the IndyCar circuit. But the Englishman has never started the race. Last year, Howard was one of the last drivers bumped from the field when he withdrew his speed and then failed to requalify.

Schmidt Motorsports announced Bell would drive for the team last month. He has made four career Indy starts with a best finish of fourth in 2009. The team also had previously announced Tagliani would drive for it.
